President Horowitz Commencement Charge

June 15, 2007

I’d like to have one last brief chance to talk with our newest Chicago School alumni.

Look around you. As a group you represent the finest graduating class in our school’s history. I’m not saying this to flatter you—it’s simply the truth. With each passing year our school becomes more internationally known, more selective, and more able to draw the top faculty and administrators in the field.  And as a result we are fortunate to attract an even more elite student population. I am absolutely certain that you will make us proud as you move forward in your professional lives.

And your careers start right now.

The point is we want you to stay involved. Whether it’s by returning to teach, by participating in a campus colloquium, taking additional courses to advance your career, mentoring psychologists … you are making a substantial contribution to our academic community.

The people in this auditorium do not need to be convinced of the importance of what we do. It’s the people outside this building. We urge you to be advocates; in Springfield, in Washington, and around the world. Because the challenges extend beyond our borders. We need you to help lead a variety of global initiatives. We ask a lot of you. None of it is easy, but all of it is possible…and more important than ever.

Thank you.
