February 26, 2007
Six Chicago School students have been invited
to join the World Federation for Mental Health
(WFMH) delegation to the 51st Session of the Commission
on the Status of Women, March 5-9, 2007. The Commission
will consider “the elimination of all forms of
discrimination and violence against the girl child."
Traveling with Dr. Nancy Dubrow, director of the
school’s Center for International Studies and past
WFMH representative to UNICEF, the students will
be able to observe some of the ongoing government
sessions within the United Nations during these
dates and will be able to attend any of the parallel
workshops presented by the non-governmental organizations
(NGOs). The NGO Committee on Mental Health and
the WFMH will present workshops during these days.
The NGO Committee on Mental Health whose membership
includes WFMH and the American Psychological Association
among others will submit a statement to the Commission
on the Status of Women, emphasizing the importance
of maintaining full mental health for all people
as recognized by the World Health Organizations
(WHO) and specifically for girls and women as well
as recommending action priorities.
Chicago School students will have the unique opportunity
to participate in bringing issues of mental health
into this international discussion, thereby influencing
the public policy debate and the final recommendations
submitted to member States.
The student delegates will report on the United
Nations activities in a community meeting upon
their return.
